In the first three quarters of 2018, the National Radio and Television Administration approved a total of 57 TV channels to begin high-definition broadcasting, representing a 200% increase compared to the same period last year. As of the end of September, the number of TV channels nationwide—approved by broadcasting institutions at various levels—to deliver content in HD had reached 215. Among these, China Media Group (CMG) has 22 HD channels, accounting for 85% of its total channels; provincial satellite TV channels include 26 HD channels, making up 84% of their lineup; provincial terrestrial channels feature 61 HD channels, representing 23% of their total; city-level stations have 64 HD channels, with HD coverage at 8%; and there are 34 paid HD channels, constituting 28% of this category. Notably, among provincial-level broadcasters, five stations—Hainan, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, and Hunan—already boast HD channel shares exceeding 70%. At the city-level, Jiangsu Province is leading in HD adoption, with 35% of its channels now available in high definition. Specifically, Suzhou, Changzhou, and Xuzhou have taken the remarkable step of upgrading all their TV channels to HD.
