Mediand Releases 2015 Survey Results on China's TV Coverage and Viewing Trends
On November 12, Meiland Media Communication Strategy Consulting Co., Ltd. released the "2015 Survey Results on China's TV Coverage and Viewing Habits" in Beijing. During the event, Meiland also announced a strategic partnership with LeTV Cloud Computing Group and the Documentary Committee of the China Association of Radio and Television.

Zhou Jiang, Chairman of Beijing Meilande Information Group, released the "2015 Survey Results on China's Television Coverage and Viewing Habits."
The report reveals that the growth momentum in satellite TV channel coverage remains strong. In 2015, the cumulative reach of 68 nationwide satellite TV channels reached 53.78 billion viewers, an increase of 1 billion compared to 2014. Overall, satellite TV channel coverage continues to expand—but at a steadily slowing pace. Meanwhile, survey data show that provincial terrestrial channels have maintained steady growth in coverage for the past twelve consecutive years since 2004. In 2015, the average coverage rate of 253 provincial-level terrestrial channels within their respective provinces hit 70.0%.
In terms of the overall scale of the digital TV industry, by 2015, the total number of households covered by digital TV services nationwide—including cable digital TV, direct-broadcast satellite digital TV, wireless microwave digital TV, and terrestrial digital TV—reached 300 million, accounting for approximately 83% of all TV households. This represented a net increase of about 14 million households compared to 2014, marking the continued deepening of the digital era in TV program transmission and reception.
The report also noted that IPTV and OTT TV—two innovative television distribution channels born from the convergence of TV with telecommunications and the internet—are experiencing robust growth, driven by highly supportive policies. As of the end of August 2015, the number of IPTV subscribers nationwide had surpassed 70 million, accounting for 5.35% of the country’s total population. Meanwhile, the OTT TV sector has been expanding at an equally rapid pace: in 2014, the national OTT TV subscriber base stood at over 2 million, but by 2015, it surged to 6.352 million—a remarkable year-over-year increase of 193.5%.
The report concludes that the trend toward media mobility is set to become unstoppable in the future. Among all types of media, television continues to lead with an overwhelming 98.6% reach, though its audience share has been steadily declining. Meanwhile, mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets are seeing their reach steadily climb, securing a solid second place in 2015 with a 56.0% penetration rate. In contrast, computer-based internet usage dipped slightly to 44.0% in 2015 compared to the previous year. Notably, outdoor and building-mounted TV installations also experienced a significant rise in 2015, each reaching around 40% coverage—highlighting their enduring value as key platforms for information dissemination, even in today’s fragmented media landscape.
At the subsequent press conference, Cui Yanzhen, General Manager of Beijing Meiland Media Communication Strategy Consulting Co., Ltd., and Yang Yongqiang, Chairman of LeEco Cloud Computing Co., Ltd., jointly announced the establishment of a strategic partnership. It is understood that Meiland and LeEco Cloud Computing Group will launch a strategic collaboration called "Broadcasting & Television Cloud," under which the two companies will embark on a series of joint initiatives focused on video big data. Meanwhile, Meiland also announced that it will collaborate with the Documentary Research Center at the Communication University of China to co-establish the "CDRC-CMMR" Documentary New Media Research Center.
