What are SG-SDI and HD-SDI?
First, we need to understand what SDI is. Known as the Serial Digital Interface in English, it’s actually a type of interface—specifically, a digital serial interface.
The SDI interface can broadly be categorized into three types: SD-SDI (270 Mbps, SMPTE 259M), HD-SDI (1.485 Gbps, SMPTE 292M), and 3G-SDI (2.97 Gbps, SMPTE 424M). As this classification clearly demonstrates, data rate is a crucial indicator.
HD-SDI stands for High-Definition Serial Digital Interface. An HD-SDI is a real-time, uncompressed, high-definition broadcast-grade camera—a significant technological advancement in the field of security surveillance—providing monitoring centers with a device that delivers exceptionally clear image sources. HD-SDI cameras are high-definition, real-time video cameras designed to transmit uncompressed digital video signals via 75-ohm coaxial cables, adhering to the SMPTE (Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers) serial-link standard.
3G-SDI signals have long been widely adopted in the broadcasting and television industry. As the security industry continues to evolve, the technology's high-speed, uncompressed digital advantages are increasingly being recognized. Today, the market offers a wide range of 3G-SDI products, including SDI-to-analog converters, SDI digital switching matrix systems, and SDI splitters. These devices all support 3G signals while remaining compatible with 1.5G signals, enabling reliable long-distance transmission to meet users' diverse needs.
So, what exactly is the difference between 3G-SDI and HD-SDI?
The HD-SDI optical transceiver is a highly reliable, high-performance serial digital optical transmission device designed and manufactured specifically for the television industry. It supports signal formats ranging from 19.4 Mbps to 1.485 Gbps and is compatible with digital TV standards such as SMPTE292, SMPTE259M, SMPTE297M, SMPTE305M, SMPTE310M, as well as DVB-ASI (EN50083-9), meeting the stringent requirements of industrial-grade products. The 3G-SDI ultra-high-definition digital video optical transceiver represents an advanced upgrade of the HD-SDI model, offering expanded signal capabilities from 19.4 Mbps up to 2.97 Gbps. It fully supports digital TV formats compliant with SMPTE424M, SMPTE292M, SMPTE259M, SMPTE297M, SMPTE305M, SMPTE310M, along with DVB-ASI (EN50083-9).
With the emergence of high-definition (HD) video standards such as 1080i and 720P, interfaces were adjusted to accommodate the higher data rate of 1.485 Gbps. This 1.485-Gbps serial interface is commonly referred to as the HD-SDI interface, defined by SMPTE292M—and it continues to utilize the same 75-ohm coaxial cable. SMPTE later approved a new standard called SMPTE424M, which doubles the SDI data rate to 2.97 Gbps over the same 75-ohm coaxial cable. Known as 3-Gbps (3G) SDI, this advanced standard supports even higher-resolution image qualities, including 1080P and digital cinema formats. Currently, the highest-performing digital product available is 7K-SDI.
