Grantham Research survey reveals: In 2014, China's cable-based HD digital television sector experienced rapid growth. Throughout the year, the number of cable-based HD digital TV subscribers (referred to as "HD users") surged past 17 million households, accounting for 70% of the total annual increase in cable digital TV subscribers—a new record high. Meanwhile, the annual growth in standard-definition (SD) cable digital TV users showed a declining trend; this year, the increase in HD users was 2.3 times greater than that of SD users.
Gran Research Analysis: The primary drivers of future growth in cable digital TV subscribers will be the transition to and secondary upgrade to high-definition services.
The main reasons why cable operators are choosing to fully transition to HD are:
1) Standard-definition set-top boxes offer limited content and have fewer features, which could hinder future operational growth.
2) The high-definition interactive platform can support a wider range of value-added services, aligning with the operator's next-phase development plan.
3) Users now have higher demands for video clarity, and HD better meets their growing expectations for video quality.
